Tips for Staging a New Year’s Eve Party

It’s party time! After all, who doesn’t love a fabulous New Year’s Eve party? New Year’s Eve is less than a week away — are you planning to throw a party for your friends and family? Inviting lots of people into your home for a New Year’s Eve celebrating can be an overwhelming task. As you prepare for the big night, we would like to offer you a few tips from an interior design perspective.

Staging Your Party

Thinking through your home and the flow of the party is an important aspect of planning and executing the event. Aside from the tasks of providing the right amount of food and drinks, creating a theme, and planning any special aspects of the party (midnight toast, group game, dancing, etc.), it is vital to consider the way in which to create a positive party environment. Here are a few tips:

1. Before introducing any New Year’s Eve decor into your space, figure out the placing of your furniture. Be ready and willing to rearrange furniture in order that people are able to move and mix and mingle with other guests, access the food easily, and experience an array of spaces within your home.

2. Be ready to put some furniture away (in a bedroom or home office) in order to create a less cluttered look. When it comes to a larger party, less is more. Less furniture creates more open spaces and makes the party and room feel bigger.

3. Make sure to have enough available seating. While you most certainly do not want a cramped feel to the party, you also want to make seating available to guests when they need to sit down and enjoy some food or time off their feet.

4. Use small details to create a consistent look throughout the event. For example, purchase some plain, gold wrapping paper and cover several canvases with the paper. Replace framed art or photos around your house with the canvases you’ve created.

As you plan and prepare for your New Year’s Eve party, consider giving us a call to help you decorate your home and prepare for the party. We can help you create an interior environment conducive for a larger party.

To all of our friends and family, Merry Christmas! We pray that this Christmas is filled with joy, peace, and love, and that your home is a truly a place of happiness and love. What are your plans for the day? They will likely include some mixture of the following:

1. Presents given out of love and received with joy and wonder.

2. A large feast with lots of Christmas delights.

3. Lots of quality time, laughter, and joy with family and close friends.

4. Savoring lovely Christmas decorations within your home.

No matter what this day includes for you and yours, we pray that it one of the best Christmases you have ever had! Here in Southwest Florida, we enjoy perhaps some of the best weather on earth during late December. Many Naples residents enjoy visiting the beach on Christmas day, walking down lovely downtown 5th Avenue in the evening, and enjoying being outdoors. Savor every glorious minute today, and make it great! Merry Christmas from the Decorating Den team!

Peace Within Your Home

There is no doubt about it — Christmas time and the holiday season is exceedingly busy. If you’re like most people, your days are packed to the brim. Holiday shopping, Christmas parties, school programs, preparing for upcoming travels, and many other commitments fill your time. Sleep is a luxury, and your house reflects a sense of stress. It seems impossible — and yet, imperative — to turn the currently harried place you call home into a stress free place of relaxation and peace during this joyous time of here. What are some practical ways to create a peace and joy-filled oasis in the midst of the holiday intensity? Today, we would like to offer you a few practical tips.

Tips for Maintaining a Peaceful Home

A peaceful home this time of year may seem like a distant dream, but today, you can take steps to make that dream into a reality. Here are a few tips from the team at Decorating Den:

1. Schedule and take the time to de-clutter. You have parties, your child’s school Christmas party, and your family gatherings on the calendar. Why not schedule time to organize and clean? As you make this activity a daily priority, it will eventually become second nature. Imagine walking into a clutter free home after a long, busy day filled with holiday activities. What a joy that would be!

2. Be careful not to over decorate. Sure, you may have boxes upon boxes of holiday decor filled with special items dating back to your childhood. That does not necessarily mean every single item needs to go out this year. If necessary, save a few items for next year, and place them around your home on a rotating basis.

3. Carve out a special place within your home in which you can go, sit, and enjoy several minutes’ peace and quiet. This may mean a comfortable, high quality chair in your walk-in closet. It may mean a wicker bench outdoors. Take the time to carve out this place, and perhaps more importantly, take five minutes per day to actually enjoy this space.

Create and maintain a peaceful and joy-filled home. It does not need to take long. Make this pursuit a priority this holiday season, and as always, if you need help, simply give us a call! We would love to assist you.

Trendspotting: Flat Weave Rugs

What issues have you encountered as you have pursued high quality interior design within your home? Most people have trouble with any number of the following:

1. Finding high quality furniture that fits.

2. Creating a consistent look.

3. Locating specific products that complete a room.

As you are probably already aware, selecting a rug for any given room is one of the most difficult tasks related to interior design (fits into number 3 above). Why? Because many rugs fit into very specific styles and color schemes. Rugs have immense power to draw a room together in the most perfect, pleasing way. Conversely, though, they have the power to create a disjointed, busy, and unfocused look. Investing in the right rug is a monumental task.

Flat Weave Rugs: The Latest Trend

In the design realm, flat weave rugs represent one of the latest, greatest trends out there. We continued to see it as a theme at High Point Market late this fall. What, exactly, are flat weave rugs? And perhaps more importantly, why are they continuing to gain popularity for use in the home?

1. Flat weave rugs, quite simply, are woven so that they lie flat. They do not provide any pile or depth. Rather, they simply cover floors. They are lightweight, easily move-able, and often contain a striking design with deep colors. They can be made using wool or a synthetic material.

2. Flat weave rugs are often more affordable than their more substantial counterparts. These rugs are highly favored by interior designers because of their affordability and often bright, large design elements.

3. Many higher quality flat weave rugs are reversible, giving home owners the ability to create a couple of different looks with ease. Colors on both sides are complementary, and designs are often reflective of one another.

When selecting a flat weave rug, it is essential to purchase a high quality, 100% wool rug. These rugs will be less likely to curl up on their four corners. Additionally, it is also important to purchase a high quality rug pad (preferably felt) if possible. These will protect the rug and the floor from any damage caused by heat or humidity, and also keep these lightweight rugs in place. For any additional questions regarding flat weave rugs, give us a call! We would love to help you find the perfect one to match your existing furniture and room layout.

Trends in Color

As a design firm located in the heart of Southwest Florida, we desire to remain current on trends that range the gambit in interior design. Our goal is to continue to cultivate an understanding of what’s “hot” in the world of design so that we can best help our clients navigate the world of interiors in order to accomplish their own goals for their homes. As we help clients decipher interior design trends and define their goals, our objective is to create a unified, cohesive, and useful look that reflects the personality and style of our clients.

In terms of color, many interior design trends take their cue from the world of fashion. High fashion influences both graphic and interior design. Additionally, color has immense power within the home to evoke emotion, create a style, and offset the necessities within our homes. What, then, are a few of the trends in color within the interior design world, and what are a few of the ways in which they can influence the look and feel of any given home’s interiors?

Current Color Trends

  • A nod to the environment. Greens, grays, and navy all abound in the world of color. As a salute to the environmental movement, many pieces of furniture, color combinations, and manufacturers are favoring these types of colors as neutral palettes. The neutrals seen in nature appear as trends — evocative of the outdoor sensibility favored by so many right now.
  • Pops of colors. Within a rather neutral palette, many designers and vendors feature a smattering of pops of color. These bright additions lend themselves to placement within more neutral palettes, creating focal points within any given room. Bright pinks/magentas, greens, tangerines, and happy yellows make themselves easily known in this happy trend.
  • Throw pillow and paint incorporation. As you absorb these trends, consider adding them in small doses within a more traditional environment. Use an accent wall or several throw pillows to incorporate these trends within your home without centering your entire design theme around them.

As you consider the ways in which color plays an essential part in the life of your house, give us a call! We would love to help you create a consistent look that reflects your unique style and personality.

Trends in Style

As we seek to help our clients create the homes of their dreams, our own desire is to continue pursuing excellence in the world of design. Throughout the life of our interior design firm, we stay on top of trends, educate ourselves on vendor developments, and seek to put together plans that truly meet the needs of our clients. As such, we are continuing our series on “Trends” for the 2012-2013 season. Today, we will be sharing some style trends with you in order that you may make informed decisions about which trends to incorporate — and which trends to forego in favor of classic, tried and true design principles.

Trends in Style

Before we put these trends in front of you, it is important to define the word “Style.” Style can point to many things, however, it encompasses both the type of look you are going for in your home, as well as the small details that draw everything together. For example, the Mediterranean style is very popular in the Southwest Florida area, and Mediterranean details can run throughout these types of homes. These details include tropical artwork, greens and burnt reds, and natural materials, such as tiles and clay pottery. As we explore various stylistic trends, here are a few of the elements we have noticed:

  • Revival of the 70s. The 1970s have made a retro appearance in our vendors’ repertoire. Clean furniture lines, tufted leather, glass furniture, and chrome pieces have continued to represent the “next big thing” in terms of style.
  • Personalization. For those who desire to create a unified, high quality interior look within their home, a very high percentage of those people also desire to use their home’s interiors to display various aspects of their personality and personal history. This type of stylization seeks to express something unique about the home’s owner.
  • Mixed metals. The creation of a unified look using a variety of types of metal, particularly when paired with mirrors, is trending this season.

How will you incorporate these trends in your home?

Trends in Fabric

Our “Trends” series culminates with one of our favorite aspects of design: FABRIC! At Decorating Den, we love to mix prints and incorporate various fabrics in whatever we do. In creating a unified look and feel while mixing prints, it is important to envision the end goal, get creative, and search for inspiration — whether it’s from nature, art, or classical design. As trends pop up, though, it is fun to figure out ways to incorporate trends in unique and interesting ways — ways that reflect the personality and style of our clients.

As we continue to research trends in fabric from manufacturers and designers, we also recognize that many of these trends stem from the world of fashion and graphic design. When it comes to fabric, it is vital to select high quality fabrics that both reflect traditional design as well as the unique style and needs of our clients. However, it is interesting to explore the trends in fabric and brainstorm ways to incorporate these trends as well.

Trends in Fabric

What are just a few of the trends popping up in the wonderful world of fabrics? Here are just a few that we have recently seen:

1. Very bold colors. Lots of bright and bold colors are popping up in fabrics, and we are all about it! We love the bright purples, hot pinks, and deep blues.

2. Florals. Bold floral prints create pieces that stand out. As focal points, these types of florals include realistic prints of flowers.

3. Textures. Lots of fun and interesting textures are popping up, including embroidered details, velvets, and other textured fabrics.

Fabric trends are just that — trends. They are fun to incorporate and interesting to utilize, but as a accent pieces rather than entire room themes. Use fabric trends as accent pillows or side chairs rather than drapes or sofas. As always, give us a call for guidance in incorporating the latest in fabric trends!

Made in the USA

Many of the things I saw at the Fall Furniture Market at High Point, North Carolina, last month intrigued me. I loved getting to know our vendors better, connecting with other interior designers, and getting lots of ideas for the ways in which I can continue to pursue excellence in interior design. I am so excited, though, regarding one of the many trends I noticed — more and more furniture and home goods manufacturers are moving production to the United States.

Reasons for United States Production

There are many reasons for this shift in the location of production. Here are just a few:

  • Consumer demand. Many furniture manufacturers and companies have realized that consumers are searching for products made in the United States. People want to invest in American made goods, and they are continuing to put their money into goods made in the U.S.
  • Economic realities. It is becoming ever more beneficial economically to move production to the United States, particularly with increased shipping costs, along with increased labor costs in other countries.
  • Quality control. Many furniture manufacturing companies are taking a more proactive approach to quality control and craftsmanship. Moving production to the United States allows for increased oversight in this very important area. Additionally, many consumers seek out the highest quality products possible — many of these high quality pieces are made in the U.S.
  • Materials. Many consumers are seeking out environmentally friendly materials. These types of materials can be more easily controlled when production is done in the United States.

Do you seek out products that are made in the United States? If so, what are your reasons? As a Naples based interior design firm, it is our desire to support businesses with production based primarily in the United States. As we move through the interior design process, we encourage our clients to utilize furniture, goods, and fabrics that are made in America.
