Lunch with Libby Langdon!

Being an interior decorator can look very glamorous from a cursory glance. We get to see the latest and greatest trends, we play with fabric all day and watch amazing bland to glam transformations of our clients home. But what you don’t see are the hours of tedious design work, the items that come in with the wrong wood stain or the fabric that shows up flawed, the truck that somehow disappears for days with a large order that is scheduled to be delivered to a client. These pull-out-your-hair, bite-your-nails, develop-an-ulcer moments are a big part of the job so when a truly glamorous moment (such as meeting a TV celeb) comes around we get really excited!

Yesterday we had the opportunity to attend a lunch with Libby Langdon as the speaker. Her humor and understanding of the industry were endearing to say the least. She shared before and after photos from her show, Small Space, Big Style as well as from her private client homes. Her charisma and “can do” attitude were inspiring and made for such a wonderful event!

Holiday Hospitality: Mood Lighting

Life is a whirl-wind right now and our little office is so busy! We had good intentions with this series of hospitality helps but the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is rapidly disappearing. Sometimes even among the buzz of holidays and crowds a small change, a flick of the switch even, can make all of the difference. Today we want to talk lighting.

Planning a party involves so many things; the menu, the guest list, the right mix of music, in all of the bustle don’t forget to make a plan for your lighting! Lighting can make the biggest difference at your party and there are a few things to think through. When you stop and consider your lighting, think through how you want people to feel as well as how your party will function. Different types of lighting have different purposes and should be considered in your overall lighting plan. You have indirect/overhead lighting (think chandeliers and ceiling lights), task lighting (this would be pendant lighting over counters and bar areas) and accent lighting (decorative lamps and wall sconces) to work with. Having your lights on dimmers can be quite helpful but if that is not the case you can still play with what you have to find the right mix for your shin-dig.

Below are some fun and festive lighting fixtures that show examples of each type of lighting.

Ready for the Holidays: The Bar Cart

Tis the season for all things holiday hosting related! Whether you play host to family or friends (not that these groups are mutually exclusive), in-town or out of town guests, a house full of kids or an evening full of cocktails, hospitality is the name of the game. For the next few weeks we will provide you with helpful hostess tips so you can pull off the perfect party and maintain your sanity. To start off we present the bar cart!

The bar cart is making a come back! It is a great way to gather drinks in one area and (literally) cart them to an area where your guests can help themselves. Keeping it well stocked ensures a carefree party so that you can concentrate on other things, like you guests! With the variety of carts available, there is certainly one out there to fit your style and party needs. Between parties the cart can stay stocked for the random holiday cocktail visit or decorated with family photos and cozy memorabilia. Here are some of our favs!

A blast of color!

Color can transform a space from “Eh” to “Wow”! We have been pinning lots of fun color schemes lately. Here are some color blasts that we are crushing on.

Amazing how funky, bold wallpaper transforms the classic kitchen to something unique!

Painting the back of these bookshelves blue distinguishes the accessories and adds so much to this office.

Grouping like colored things also adds some interest to a space. (Fun note: This is book wallpaper)

This traditional looking navy blue is lightened up with white stripes (or is the crisp white toned down by the navy?)

Fall Trends

Labor Day weekend has arrived! Here in Southwest Florida we don’t exactly smell Fall in the air. Nothing is crisp or cool in anyway but we know Fall is coming by the exciting trends flying around the internet and popping up in our catalogs! Here are some things we see trending.

Brass is back. Like most trends this works great in accessories, even the unexpected like a pillow! Using brass pieces in several areas around your home can help tie this look together.

Bold colors are sticking around. Pantone named Emerald the color of 2013 and boy are we seeing it everywhere! Paired with beige neutrals this is a trend that continues to hold its own. Add color to your home in small doses. With so much to choose from in lighting fixtures, pillows, artwork, and accessories, there are plenty of ways to make this trend work for you.

Serena Wall Sconce

Our final notable Fall trend is embellished walls. Grasscloth, textured wallpapers, big patterns, and whimsy repeats are getting lots of attention. Used properly this trend will stand the test of time and give your plain walls a nice little interest boost.

Beaded Butterflies in Navy

These Fall trends are our way to metaphorically feel the changing of the seasons. Give us a call so we can help incorporate these decorating ideas into your own home!

Trendspotter: Grasscloth

York Wallcovering grasscloth

Grasscloth is popping up everywhere! We have used it in quite a few jobs of late and want to share some of the ways we have incorporated it into an overall design.

Small Spaces: Bathrooms and kitchens are transformed with this product. Keeping in mind this is a natural product we have opted to use a premium vinyl product in these moisture rich areas to reduce the risk of damage, peeling of seams and for easy cleaning!

Accent wall: Used behind an entertainment unit or covering a wall displaying artwork, grasscloth can really help bring an area into focus.

Living space: Papering an entire room with grasscloth can give a very rich look and feel (see photo above) without taking away from other elements.

Something to Keep in Mind: The very nature of grasscloth is, well, it’s natural. Its beauty is in its imperfection – just like leather or stone. Made by creation, it was given unique personality. This is not a material that can be matched up and aligned perfectly.  If that is the look you are going for, might we interest you in a stripe wallpaper (which can also be a good look)? Grasscloth is meant to show a seam of sorts but when you stand back you can see how it really transforms a space and provides your home with that one-of -a-kind look.

We would love to talk with you more about how to incorporate this interior design element trend into your home. Give us call for our free in-home consult – there is so much to choose from, we can certainly make your walls pop, too!!

LED Lighting Techniques

You’ve seen LED technology used in many ways before — this progressive lighting innovation is used in televisions, aviation lighting, and many other commercial-use technologies. What does LED actually stand for? Light-emitting diodes, and these little babies are FINALLY making a splash in the world of installation lighting in the home. Though considerably more expensive than traditional bulbs, they have the ability to last up to 25,000 hours, and they use 75% less energy than their traditional counterparts. AND, as an added bonus, more recent developments in the world of LEDs have made a yellowish hue more available (only bluish tones had been available to consumers in the past). What’s not to love?

Lighting Techniques

Let’s move on to the nitty gritty. Why (and where) install LEDs in YOUR home?

1. LED lighting is available in a few of the coolest forms around. It is available in tapes and strips, make it flexible and versatile, for use in many places and spaces throughout the home.

2. LED lights are available in a range of levels of brightness. This gives you the ability to decide how bright you want to go — in a kitchen space, for example, you might want to use the ultra-bright option. Underneath the stairs on your staircase or for use as an accent, though, you may decide on a softer level.

3. LED lighting can be used virtually anywhere! Where to use? Underneath your bathroom vanity, above and below your bathroom mirror, underneath the breakfast bar in your kitchen, above and below your kitchen cabinets, underneath each individual stair on your staircase. The possibilities are endless!

Yes, LED lighting is an investment, but it adds so much value to your space, and it creates a look that will last a VERY long time! Contact me for ideas or pricing!

Corporate Visitors to Decorating Den

We were so pleased to welcome Jim and Carol Bugg, corporate owners of Decorating Den, to our Naples office earlier this month. Their visit commemorated our receipt of two Southwest Florida Decorating Den designations [Business Owner of the Year, Top Sales (Individual, Developing Franchise Owner)]. We would like to thank them for visiting us, and we look forward to another wonderful year of growth as we support and serve our clients.

Trendspotter: Textured Wallpapers

Craving the look and feel of a cabin in the woods, rustic nautical cottage, exposed brick facade, or vintage tin tiles? Without spending thousands upon thousands of dollars to create this look using natural materials, this look can become a reality within your home! Maybe you enjoy changing up your look, or maybe you know exactly what you want, but do not like the hefty price tag and dusty mess associated with it! Textured wallpapers are all the rage right now, and they are available in a wide range of prints — plus, they look incredibly real, with depth and relief galore, even though they are as flat as any other traditional wallpaper. Genius!

Incorporating This Trend in Your Home

Is this a trend you would like to incorporate into your home? Here are just a few of our suggestions:

1. These wallpapers are best used on just one wall of your home. Maybe you want an entire “wood paneled” room. Just start with one wall. Though these papers look real, it is important to use them sparingly.

2. These papers are permanent. Though they can be changed out and are considerably less expensive than the real thing (stone, brick, panels, etc.), they still represent an investment into your home’s interiors.

3. Select these fake facades with the help of a professional interior designer so things will not end up looking cheesy or disjointed but rather consistent, cohesive and “wow”.

This trend is oh-so-much fun! We would love to show you some of the many papers available out there!
