Holiday Hospitality: Mood Lighting

Life is a whirl-wind right now and our little office is so busy! We had good intentions with this series of hospitality helps but the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is rapidly disappearing. Sometimes even among the buzz of holidays and crowds a small change, a flick of the switch even, can make all of the difference. Today we want to talk lighting.

Planning a party involves so many things; the menu, the guest list, the right mix of music, in all of the bustle don’t forget to make a plan for your lighting! Lighting can make the biggest difference at your party and there are a few things to think through. When you stop and consider your lighting, think through how you want people to feel as well as how your party will function. Different types of lighting have different purposes and should be considered in your overall lighting plan. You have indirect/overhead lighting (think chandeliers and ceiling lights), task lighting (this would be pendant lighting over counters and bar areas) and accent lighting (decorative lamps and wall sconces) to work with. Having your lights on dimmers can be quite helpful but if that is not the case you can still play with what you have to find the right mix for your shin-dig.

Below are some fun and festive lighting fixtures that show examples of each type of lighting.

Decorating Den Interiors named a Retail Star by Home Accents Today magazine

Claudia Leah Decorating Den Retail Star Cover Magazine

May 16, 2012, Greensboro, N.C. – Decorating Den Interiors of Naples has been named one of Home Accents Today’s Retail Stars for 2012 by editors of the premier trade magazine for the home accents industry. The Naples Decorating Den Interiors franchise is owned and operated by Claudia Leah.

The businesses selected for the Retail Stars list have demonstrated that they operate successfully in their marketing areas, exhibit strength in merchandising, display and/or advertising, and have a positive presence in their local communities. The magazine’s editors chose to extend the honor to both the Decorating Den Interiors franchisor as well as its independent franchisees that operate throughout the U.S. and Canada, and range from small home offices to multi-decorator studios.

“There has never been a tougher time to be an independent retailer, with ongoing competition from chain stores, the increasingly significant role of online retail and the difficult economic climate,” said Jenny Heinzen York, editor in chief, Home Accents Today. “The 2012 Retail Stars have taken on these challenges with a combination of clever entrepreneurship, innovation, merchandising, customer service and marketing. We are delighted to recognize these talented merchants, and, as always, encourage everyone to support their own local businesses.”

Claudia Leah Wins Stars Award LogoHome Accents Today editors focused on independent and family-run retailers, specifically those considered specialty, home accent or home furnishings stores. Members of the industry were invited to suggest stores and retailers were encouraged to submit information describing their businesses. The list, now in its eighth year, was compiled and narrowed down by research analysts and editors of the publication. A business may be named to the list only one time, resulting in 50 first-time honorees each year.

Retail Editor Susan Dickenson said she was impressed with Decorating Den’s history, industry reputation, and its new accessories home-party division. “The Livv! Home Accessories branding and debut catalog, at 36 beautiful pages, are really impressive for a start-up; you can tell there’s a lot of experience and a real understanding of the accessories business behind this project,” Dickenson said. She also noted the endurance of Decorating Den’s annual national decorating contest, now in its 27th year, and the franchise owners’ practice of selecting a national charity to support each year with donations raised through decorating seminars and other events.

The 50 Retail Stars list, sponsored by AmericasMart Atlanta, is published in the May 2012 issue of Home Accents Today. The 25-year-old publication, based in Greensboro, N.C., is owned by Sandow Media.

Long-Distance Decorating

Claudia Leah at Decorating Den Interiors makes it easy for seasonal residents.

With so many seasonal residents in Naples, decorating winter homes can be a little more complicated.   They’re only here three to six months and they have so many other fun things to do!

This may present a problem for them, but not for Claudia Leah of Decorating Den Interiors, who specializes in decorating long-distance.

“I can provide the same customer service for my seasonal clients as I do for my year-round customers, thanks to the Internet,” she explains.

Chris and Kristin Seeger are perfect examples.  They had just purchased a three-story town home, which was a mess: dark carpeting, heavy drapes and Mediterranean light fixtures.  The only furniture they had was a patio set they had purchased to use in the condo they had rented.

They called Claudia the day before they were to return to Vancouver and literally met with her hours before their return flight.  They walked through their new home with her.   Claudia took measurements and photos, and listened to their needs.   They wanted their new home to be light, bright and airy.

By the time they returned to Naples in mid-October, most of their decorating decisions had been made and deliveries had been scheduled.

“This house was decorated by Claudia and us between Naples and Vancouver,” Kristin explains.  “Through internet selections, emails, fabric swatches mailed to us and returned, and numerous conference calls, she got the job done.”

Claudia uses a computer program to create a home’s rooms.   She adds furniture to scale, colors, fabrics, lighting fixtures, window treatments and accessories.  She then sends it to the client via the Internet so they can get a visual of her design recommendations.

As soon as the Seegers returned to Naples, the deliveries started coming: furniture, window treatments, lighting fixtures, bedding, lamps and accessories.   Within two weeks their town home was about 75% complete.   During the next couple of weeks, they worked with Claudia to tweak every room, incorporating their personal possessions and artwork into the design.   Claudia even custom-embroidered a pillow for them to match a sculpture they had purchased at an art show.

They love their new home.   It’s light, bright and airy.   And, they give all the credit to Claudia.

“We just think the world of her and her team,” says Kristin.  “People from Europe, any out-of-town people who are buying homes here now and will have to leave, should know that the project will be in good hands with Claudia Leah of Decorating Den Interiors.   It can be done long distance – on time and on budget!”

When In Doubt, Take It Out!

When it comes to decorating, sometimes you have to let it go.

When in doubtOften decorating a home isn’t about adding more furniture or accessories; it’s about taking some away.  That’s when consulting with a knowledgeable interior decorator like Claudia Leah of Decorating Den Interiors can be most helpful and liberating.

“Sometimes people have pieces in their home they actually never quite liked but still keep them around since they either cost them a lot of money, or they ‘got it from my mother-in-law, don’t like it, but it needs to be here when she comes for a visit once a year’,” explains Claudia.

Claudia knows how to size up a room and find the glaring errors that keep the space from coming together in harmony.   Perhaps it’s a piece of furniture that needs to be reupholstered, a framed picture that just needs a new mat, or a lamp that simply needs a new shade.   But, many times, it’s something that doesn’t fit, something they don’t even like, something that just needs to go.  And that can be painful for the homeowners.  That’s when Claudia can help with their “separation anxiety.”

“It really depends on how strongly the client feels (or hates) the piece,” Claudia says.  “I often get called in to be the mediator between spouses because they can not reach an agreement.”

Often homes are over decorated because people keep adding and adding and never taking away.    The space is more about the decorations than the people who live there.  She shows them that if they let go and give the room some white space they will feel freer and the pieces they do like will stand out, not be lost in the clutter.

Holding on to something because someone gave it to you is just holding you back, keeping you from moving forward.  No one, not even a mother or mother-in-law, should ever dictate your lifestyle or surroundings.   When a client is on the fence about a piece, her rule is ‘when in doubt, take it out!’

She suggests options in ‘letting go:  Give the piece to another family member who will appreciate it.  Or sell it on Craig’s List or Ebay and make a little money.  Or donate it to a resale shop for a charitable cause (and get a tax write-off too).

With lots of tact and a gentle nudge, Claudia guides her clients through the process, understanding that it can be emotional.   Once the pain is gone, their rooms come alive, looking larger and more welcoming.

“When a client finally lets go and purges these out-of-place pieces they find their lives simplified.  They feel freer, happier and energized,” Claudia says.
