“Like so much else in life, luxury is relative. When it comes to interior design, the concept is often invoked, but its meaning can take many forms.” These words for ELLEDECOR Magazine’s “Luxury Survey” have made us reflect on what luxury means to us. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner there is no better time to delve into the concept of luxury.

Probably most homeowners would agree with ELLEDECOR’s findings that 68% of respondents said “quality beats everything else in determining what constitutes true luxury.” However, that begs the question: What is quality?

Is quality using high-end materials? Great craftsmanship? Is it exclusivity or brand recognition? Obviously these things play a role in quality but for quality to truly lend itself to luxury we argue there is an additional element. True luxury is a feeling. It is personal and should make you feel special! So, luxurious touches might be a certain fabric that transforms when upholstered onto your great-grandmothers chair or turns a plain window into something extraordinary with window treatments. It might be the addition of badly needed accessories or a lush rug that defines your space and pulls a room together. When these things make you feel something special we have taken quality and turned it into luxury!

Trends in Fabric

Our “Trends” series culminates with one of our favorite aspects of design: FABRIC! At Decorating Den, we love to mix prints and incorporate various fabrics in whatever we do. In creating a unified look and feel while mixing prints, it is important to envision the end goal, get creative, and search for inspiration — whether it’s from nature, art, or classical design. As trends pop up, though, it is fun to figure out ways to incorporate trends in unique and interesting ways — ways that reflect the personality and style of our clients.

As we continue to research trends in fabric from manufacturers and designers, we also recognize that many of these trends stem from the world of fashion and graphic design. When it comes to fabric, it is vital to select high quality fabrics that both reflect traditional design as well as the unique style and needs of our clients. However, it is interesting to explore the trends in fabric and brainstorm ways to incorporate these trends as well.

Trends in Fabric

What are just a few of the trends popping up in the wonderful world of fabrics? Here are just a few that we have recently seen:

1. Very bold colors. Lots of bright and bold colors are popping up in fabrics, and we are all about it! We love the bright purples, hot pinks, and deep blues.

2. Florals. Bold floral prints create pieces that stand out. As focal points, these types of florals include realistic prints of flowers.

3. Textures. Lots of fun and interesting textures are popping up, including embroidered details, velvets, and other textured fabrics.

Fabric trends are just that — trends. They are fun to incorporate and interesting to utilize, but as a accent pieces rather than entire room themes. Use fabric trends as accent pillows or side chairs rather than drapes or sofas. As always, give us a call for guidance in incorporating the latest in fabric trends!

Long-Distance Decorating

Claudia Leah at Decorating Den Interiors makes it easy for seasonal residents.

With so many seasonal residents in Naples, decorating winter homes can be a little more complicated.   They’re only here three to six months and they have so many other fun things to do!

This may present a problem for them, but not for Claudia Leah of Decorating Den Interiors, who specializes in decorating long-distance.

“I can provide the same customer service for my seasonal clients as I do for my year-round customers, thanks to the Internet,” she explains.

Chris and Kristin Seeger are perfect examples.  They had just purchased a three-story town home, which was a mess: dark carpeting, heavy drapes and Mediterranean light fixtures.  The only furniture they had was a patio set they had purchased to use in the condo they had rented.

They called Claudia the day before they were to return to Vancouver and literally met with her hours before their return flight.  They walked through their new home with her.   Claudia took measurements and photos, and listened to their needs.   They wanted their new home to be light, bright and airy.

By the time they returned to Naples in mid-October, most of their decorating decisions had been made and deliveries had been scheduled.

“This house was decorated by Claudia and us between Naples and Vancouver,” Kristin explains.  “Through internet selections, emails, fabric swatches mailed to us and returned, and numerous conference calls, she got the job done.”

Claudia uses a computer program to create a home’s rooms.   She adds furniture to scale, colors, fabrics, lighting fixtures, window treatments and accessories.  She then sends it to the client via the Internet so they can get a visual of her design recommendations.

As soon as the Seegers returned to Naples, the deliveries started coming: furniture, window treatments, lighting fixtures, bedding, lamps and accessories.   Within two weeks their town home was about 75% complete.   During the next couple of weeks, they worked with Claudia to tweak every room, incorporating their personal possessions and artwork into the design.   Claudia even custom-embroidered a pillow for them to match a sculpture they had purchased at an art show.

They love their new home.   It’s light, bright and airy.   And, they give all the credit to Claudia.

“We just think the world of her and her team,” says Kristin.  “People from Europe, any out-of-town people who are buying homes here now and will have to leave, should know that the project will be in good hands with Claudia Leah of Decorating Den Interiors.   It can be done long distance – on time and on budget!”

Practical and Beautiful Window Treatments for the Florida Sun

With the bright sunshine and hot temperatures of our climate here in Naples, Florida, a well-designed window treatment is essential not only for creating a beautiful living space, but for practical reasons as well.

Window Fashions - Practical and Beautiful

Privacy, energy efficiency, light control and UV protection for your furnishings are all important considerations for a properly designed window treatment. Of course it has to look great too!

The quality and amount of light can affect the entire feel and mood of a room, and bring out the colors of your furnishings.  At the same time, selecting the right window fashions will help you achieve exactly the degree of privacy you’re looking for, from any exposure, any time of day.

In Naples, especially in the summer, we need to use our window fashions to harness solar energy in a way that lets in the right amount of light, while keeping the heat under control.

One of my favorite recent developments in window fashions is part blind/part shade/part sheer drapery, providing the best qualities of all three. Two pieces of sheer fabric are used with fabric vanes that can be adjusted to provide the exact amount of filtered light and privacy desired. When pulled up, the entire shade is hidden by a color-coordinated headrail.  A variety of colors are available for both vanes and sheer fabrics, which are easily cleaned with soap and water.  The ultimate in beauty and practicality!
