High Point Review

The Fall High Point Market was a few weeks ago and boy do we have some fun things to share! High Point is the place we go to see the latest and greatest from our vendors. Here are some trends we noticed during market:

  • Mid-century modern is making a statement in a big way.
  • Metallics are holding steady in the mix of deep, rich colors. Think deep jewel tones mixed with brass and copper.
  • Large scale prints are all over the place, so are velvets!

Here are some fun pics from the trip (yes, a picture with Barclay Butera was a highlight!).

Holiday Hospitality: Mood Lighting

Life is a whirl-wind right now and our little office is so busy! We had good intentions with this series of hospitality helps but the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas is rapidly disappearing. Sometimes even among the buzz of holidays and crowds a small change, a flick of the switch even, can make all of the difference. Today we want to talk lighting.

Planning a party involves so many things; the menu, the guest list, the right mix of music, in all of the bustle don’t forget to make a plan for your lighting! Lighting can make the biggest difference at your party and there are a few things to think through. When you stop and consider your lighting, think through how you want people to feel as well as how your party will function. Different types of lighting have different purposes and should be considered in your overall lighting plan. You have indirect/overhead lighting (think chandeliers and ceiling lights), task lighting (this would be pendant lighting over counters and bar areas) and accent lighting (decorative lamps and wall sconces) to work with. Having your lights on dimmers can be quite helpful but if that is not the case you can still play with what you have to find the right mix for your shin-dig.

Below are some fun and festive lighting fixtures that show examples of each type of lighting.

Trendspotter: Grasscloth

York Wallcovering grasscloth

Grasscloth is popping up everywhere! We have used it in quite a few jobs of late and want to share some of the ways we have incorporated it into an overall design.

Small Spaces: Bathrooms and kitchens are transformed with this product. Keeping in mind this is a natural product we have opted to use a premium vinyl product in these moisture rich areas to reduce the risk of damage, peeling of seams and for easy cleaning!

Accent wall: Used behind an entertainment unit or covering a wall displaying artwork, grasscloth can really help bring an area into focus.

Living space: Papering an entire room with grasscloth can give a very rich look and feel (see photo above) without taking away from other elements.

Something to Keep in Mind: The very nature of grasscloth is, well, it’s natural. Its beauty is in its imperfection – just like leather or stone. Made by creation, it was given unique personality. This is not a material that can be matched up and aligned perfectly.  If that is the look you are going for, might we interest you in a stripe wallpaper (which can also be a good look)? Grasscloth is meant to show a seam of sorts but when you stand back you can see how it really transforms a space and provides your home with that one-of -a-kind look.

We would love to talk with you more about how to incorporate this interior design element trend into your home. Give us call for our free in-home consult – there is so much to choose from, we can certainly make your walls pop, too!!

Trendspotter: Monograms

As we have mentioned many times over the course of the past few months, personalization in the world of interior design continues to trend upwards. Today, we plan to discuss another type of personalized design: Monograms. Monogramming and personalizing items continues to be a popular method of distinguishing our identities. Monogramming exists beyond traditional wedding towels and napkins — monogramming continues to show its popularity in the world of business and business casual fashion, stamps, brands, and prints, marketing (logos, branding, etc.), and many other areas of life. How is monogramming becoming more and more popular in the are of home fashions?

Monogramming and Home Decor

Monogramming has been incorporated into custom towels and bathroom items for decades. Monogrammed towels have been perhaps among the most popular and traditional wedding gifts. In what other ways are monogrammed items becoming important in interior design?

1. Customized art. Printed, monogrammed art incorporates the initials of family members or spouses. Custom silhouettes continue to be a popular way to display members of your family within a traditional setting.

2. Accent pieces. Monogramming is available for accent pillows, lampshades, and silver platters. These types of pieces become heirlooms and unique expressions of your own identity. They are individual, work within the context of your home, and represent functional items for use on a daily basis.

3. Home linens. Almost any high quality, elegant home linen is able to be monogrammed, including napkins, table cloths, bed sheets, pillowcases, etc. In short, every room of your house can have a personalized, monogrammed piece.

4. Dishes. Many dishes, glasses, mugs, platters, and serving dishes may be monogrammed to reflect your family’s identity.

As you seek to personalize your home and add small details which reflect your identity, consider selecting monogrammed pieces for use within your home. For more information on home decor items which may be personalized using monograms, give us a call! We would love to help you incorporate this trend into your home – and don’t forget that they can make fabulous gifts, too!

Trendspotter: Geometric Prints

Do you enjoy keeping up to date with current trends and incorporating these trends into your home environment? Keeping updated on trends certainly takes some work (reading, scouring the internet, spending lots of time on Pinterest). We are pleased to bring you another edition of Decorating Den’s “Trendspotter,” in which we alert you to burgeoning interior design trends. Geometric prints have influenced many new interior design products, furniture, and features available for homes.

Geometric Prints

What, exactly, defines geometric prints?

1. Straight, cohesive, prints evocative of figures one might see in a high school math textbook. Many straight lines, circular objects, and other geometric-type shapes coalesce in these types of interiors.

2. Bold colors (often) or blacks, whites, and grays. Lots of bold colors and interesting, unexpected color combinations are popping up in geometric interiors, though some feature only blacks, whites, and grays.

3. Balanced, congruent shapes with permutations possible (think modern art). Many geometrics have repeating patterns; others draw upon modern art and feature seemingly random shapes and lines.

How to Incorporate the Trend Into Your Home

These geometric prints making their way into interiors draw upon the world of fashion. Geometric prints continue to be featured on the runway, straight from the world’s top fashion design houses. How are these types of prints being incorporated into interiors? Here are just a few ways we would suggest incorporating this trend into your own home:

1. A flat weave rug. (Yes — we featured flat weave rugs earlier this month in another edition of “Trendspotter.) Flat weave rugs are a great way to feature geometric prints in your home without making TOO big of a commitment. Cost-effective and available in a variety of sizes, flat weave geometric rugs are available in a range of prices and colors.

2. Master bedroom bedding. Utilize bold geometric prints to create an oasis within the master bedroom of your home. Many geometrics are available in duvet covers, accent pillows, etc. making incorporating this trend in your bedroom feasible.

3. A side chair. A custom size chair in a geometric print can create a focal point for any room. Select bold colors that mesh with your existing furniture.

We would love to tell you more about the ways in which you can incorporate geometric prints within your own home. Give us a call!
